The movement of people and goods in urban centres continues to evolve as population increases. Modern and sustainable means of transportation are constantly introduced to ensure free flow of traffic and ease for passengers. With global warming, urban centres on the African continent need to start exploring greener and earth friendly means of transportation.

It is no longer news that Nigeria is one of the most populous nations in the world. With its rapidly growing population comes a great deal of transportation activities. 90% of the transportation activities conducted in Nigeria is via road. The population density in most cities in the country has quadrupled transportation activities thereby putting more pressure on the not-so-good roads, degrading them further and increasing carbon emission which has grave consequences on the environment and human life.

Road accidents and noise pollution are also some of the realities of urban mobility in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. Road accidents continue to be on the rise primarily due to poor road infrastructure. Noise pollution occasioned by the revving of engines and car honks continue to increase. This has been associated with increased stress levels, high blood pressure, hearing problems and sleep disorders among city dwellers of all ages and genders.

What will however make the difference across the continent is the introduction of safer and more eco-friendly means of transportation in urban centres. It is high time African governments began to explore the use of bicycles, electric bikes, electric scooters, electric vehicles, electric cars, green trains, multiple occupant vehicles, etc. to support urban mobility. While these are being explored, adequate infrastructure also need to be put in place to ensure efficiency.

Not only do eco-friendly means of transportation contribute to the environment, they help you save money, boost your economy and contribute to the health and wellbeing of citizens.

Trekk Scooters is setting the pace in redefining urban mobility through the introduction of micromobility to closed communities (residential estates and university campuses). This, we believe, is a starting point for solving some of the transportation challenges on the African continent.
